Winter is Coming...

This November has no doubt been one of the frostiest in memory, but here at Gleem we care about our readers, and want you to remain warm and toasty this winter. If you⫪re looking to keep your gas bill low this year, here a few simple ways to beat the cold.Layer up!It is proven that wearing many thinner layers than one thick one is proven to better insulate. This is because air gets trapped in between all these layers, and eventually your body heat. One thick layer may seem like it⫪s warmer at first, but your body heat will escape overtime. Wear thermal layers for particularly cold weather.Hot FoodIt⫪s time to trade out the salads and iced tea for warmer alternatives. Hearty, cooked food like casseroles, soups and curry really help to up body temperature and drink warm beverages like tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Swap out normal tea for green tea for a boost to your immunity system to fend off colds, and take a thermos flask of it into work or school.Avoid alcohol as a way to warm you up, as it in fact has the opposite effect.ExerciseLove it or hate it, exercise is a good way to keep warm as it gets the blood pumping around your body. If you choose to exercise outside, just make sure to wear weather-appropriate exercise gear. You could even jog or power-walk to work or school for maximum time efficiency.Keep the Warmth in Your HouseDraft-proof your house by making sure any holes in your foundations are filled in, use keyhole-covers on any keyholes on your doors, and if you don⫪t mind the dark, keep the blinds and curtains drawn as they will offer more layers of protection against heat escaping. If you can spring for it, lined curtains are the best for this job. For those on a budget, cover your windows with cling film or bubble wrap. These both act as heat insulators without blocking out daylight as newspapers would.Use Central HeatingAlthough the cost to heat your house is rising, it⫪s better than freezing to death. Set it to a timer to for in the morning before you wake and at night before you sleep. This will help keep your house a few degrees higher when needed and will mean you don⫪t have to worry about remembering to turn it off yourself.
